As I look out at the devastation in my yard today from the insane monsoon storm last night, it struck me how much plot twist changes are simply clearing the way for something event better.

When I planted that mesquite tree out there four years ago, I had idilic hopes it would shelter my yard from the summer heat. That my kids would play and read under its canopy. That it would attract desert wildlife to my yard.

But then, unexpectedly, just as in life, a plot twist: a strong gust of wind ended those hopes–uprooting all of the growth in a single burst.

This isn’t unlike changes in our business. Sometimes we think we’re building towards one goal, doing whatever it takes to get there. Hustling. Working hard. Supporting our lives and our business. Growing.

And then… plot twist. Something unexpected happens. Everything changes.

We feel devastated. Uprooted. Wondering what now?

But after the dust has settled, a new opportunity arises. What next? How can I build back stronger. More efficiently this time. Simpler this time. How can I take what I learned and make something even stronger.

For me, I’m looking for a new tree. Something stronger, with deeper roots. More resilient to summer storms. Something simpler that I won’t have to cut down and replace again the next time Mother Nature decides to test the strength of my roots.
